Two Rush City High School juniors were recently selected to participate in American Legion Boys and Girls State programs in June. Adam Engel was selected for Boys State by Rush City American Legion Post 93 and Jennifer Tryon was chosen to attend Girls State by the Rush City American Legion Auxiliary.

Boys State will be held at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, June 10-16,

Girls State will be held the same week at Bethel University in St. Paul.

The programs provide practical learning experiences in local and state government. Participants organize and operate their own city, county and state governments.

“Civic responsibility is encouraged along with appreciation of democratic ideals,” said Mike Bredeck, directory of Legion Boys State.

The Legion Boys State was first held in Minnesota in 1949 with 169 boys attending at the U of M campus in St. Paul.

Last year, there were approximately 340 boys attending in Marshall.
