Officers with the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office received minor injuries when a two-man fight turned into aggression against them shortly after midnight Sunday, Aug. 12 at the Almelund Threshing Show.
The incident began when Nicholas Jeffrey Salo, 20, of North Branch, and Michael Keali Scharenbroch, 23, of Stacy, were observed fighting with one another in the beer garden band area until the officers who were patrolling the event intervened, according to the criminal complaint filed with Chisago County District Court on Monday.
It was then when the men turned against the officers, the complaint continued, as Sgt. Jason Foster and deputies Derek Anklan and Chad Stenson received a few scrapes and bruises before they were able to subdue and take the suspects into custody. Sgt. Foster, who will miss some time from work due to an injured shoulder from the scuffle, reportedly struck one of the men with a taser, but the device was ineffective.
Salo and Scharenbroch have each been charged with 4th degree assault on a peace officer, which is a felony, said County Attorney Janet Reiter.
Salo’s bail was set at $25,000 unconditional or $10,000 if he complies with the condition that he not use or possess alcohol or controlled substances.
Scharenbroch’s bail was set at $15,000 unconditional or $5,000 conditional if he does not use or possess alcohol or controlled substances, Reiter noted.
Both men are scheduled to appear for the next hearing on Aug. 27.
