Girls tennis showing improvement
After 7-0 losses to Cambridge-Isanti and Benilde-St. Margaret’s, the Viking girls tennis team battled back in a close match against Robbinsdale Cooper.
First, the team faced the Bluejackets Aug. 21 in Cambridge.
“Only second doubles Cydney Bettendorf and Janice Elkerton was close, losing in three sets 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), 2-6,” said Coach Tom McLaughlin. “Cambridge has a nice, deep team this year.”
On Aug. 28 the Vikings went on the road again and lost 7-0 with no matches being close against the Red Knights.
Then it was off to Robbinsdale Cooper where the girls fought tough but fell 4-3 to the Hawks last Thursday.
“It was a close match, and the girls had a chance to win it,” said Coach McLaughlin. “Gabrielle Ruddy lost a close match at second singles 6-7 (4-7) 3-6 and is starting to play very well again. Britta Anderson won again at fourth singles 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. AlexAnn Koecher and Chritina Gamer lost a close match at first doubles 4-6, 4-6. Cydney Bettendorf and Janice Elkerton won at second doubles 6-4, 6-2 continuing their strong play. Grace Rollins and Samantha Weiss won at third doubles 6-4, 6-2.”
