In the first competion of the Rush City cross country team’s 2012 season, the Milaca Early Bird Invitational on Aug. 27, the Tiger boys team took eighth place out of 11 teams, while the girls team was imcomplete.
Garrett Larson was the first Tiger boy to cross the finish line coming in 19th out of 78 competitors. Kevin Nelson was 46th, Colton Baldwin 56th, Colin Yaritz 57th and Mason Stevens 71st.
Sammi Oscarson was the first girl Tiger to come in placing 51st out of 78 contenders. Courtney Arvidson was 58th and Payton Ramberg finished 70th.
“Garrett Larson ran a nice race for this early season meet,” said Coach Kevin Smith. “He will continue to learn his pace as the season progresses, but he was very aggressive today in a tough field of talented boys. Both Collin and Mason showed good improvements from last season’s races.
“Another bright spot was Devan Larson (freshman) on JV. His time was an indication that he has improved a lot in his knowledge of pacing. I think he will be able to help our varsity soon. The other team members all ran hard in the heat of the day, and we were pleased with each one’s effort. In the early season meets, we do not put a lot of emphasis on places and times, but train through these meets and try to gain race experience and identify some tactics to improve on,” Smith added.
The Rush City boys and girls cross country teams will compete in the Pine City Invitational at Pine City Golf Course at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6.
