The North Branch volleyball team earned a road win over St. Louis Park before falling to Benilde-St. Margaret’s at home last week.
On Sept. 4 the Vikings defeated the Orioles 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-15).
“On our second road game of the year the Vikings really stepped up to play tough against St. Louis Park,” said Coach Haley Lang. “It started out as a little of a crazy trip with our bus breaking down on the side of I-694, but the ladies were able to mentally focus on the task at hand and jump out to a first set marginal victory. At the end of the first set our setter Emily Trunk went down with a tweaked ankle and toughed it out to re-enter in the third set of the evening. Our team really adjusted well in the second set to push and create momentum for the third and final set of the evening.”
Last Thursday the team was defeated by the Red Knights 3-2 (8-25, 27-25, 28-25, 25-18, 15-11).
“A tough loss for the Vikings,” said Coach Lang. “With the Vikings jumping out early to take the first set, the second set became a battle of momentum and large point swings. We needed to be more careful with the ball at the serving line and capitalize on the mistakes of Benilde. Courtney Selbitschka and Tayler Fertig were both consistent in the front row and were able to put the ball down when we needed an attack.”
The North Branch volleyball team has a 1-4 record. The team will host the Duluth Denfeld Hunters at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 before hosting an invitational beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. The Vikings will travel to St. Francis to face the Fighting Saints at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18.
