Vikings strong against frigid Duluth winds in Swain Invitational

Last week, after first running in the Becker Invitational, the North Branch boys and girls cross-country teams braved the cold, windy hills of Duluth in the Swain Invitational.
At Pebble Creek Golf Course Oct. 2, the Viking girls team placed first among six teams, while the boys came in third out of seven teams.
Rhianna Rinke won the girl’s 4K with a time of 15:09.97.
Casey Hovland took fourth, Haley Huset 10th, Cassidy White 14th, Claire Schraufnagel 26th, Alyssa Ramberg 29th and Laura Dolezalek placed 35th out of 44 competitors.
Zach Peno was the first Viking boy to cross the finish line in the 5K, placing ninth out of 47 runners with a time of 18:39.87.
Kyle Crowell came in 16th, Jake Petrik 17th, Ean Charpentier 20th, Josh Petrik 22nd, Kyle Granger 24th and Scott Ramberg finished 33rd.
“Congrats to the following who ran faster this year than they did last year at Becker,” Coach Anna Geary said. “Casey Hovland, Ean Charpentier, Kyle Crowell, Alex Fitcha, Joshua Frich, Kyle Granger, Noah Hubbard, Joel Moore, Zach Peno, Jake Petrik, Austen Wek, Cole Willis, Leo Cornelius, Jake Bear, and Scott Ramberg.”
Last Saturday, the teams competed at Enger Golf Course in Duluth with the girls placing 15th out of 25 teams, and the boys finishing 20th out of 29 teams.
Rinke led the team again, coming in fourth out of 174 competitors with a time of 15:26.2.
The first Viking boy to finish was Charpentier, coming in 65th out of 188 runners with a time of 17:50.6.
“Yep, it was Christmas caroling type weather on Saturday up at Enger Park in Duluth,” Coach Geary said. “It was cold, but we persevered. He added, “Congrats to the following runners who ran their season personal records this year – some ran lifetime personal bests: Austen Wek, Grace Puchtel, Madison Belland, Joshua Frich, Joel Moore, Daniel Scarborough, Cameron Hufford, and Jake Petrik. Then if you take a look at our times from last year, it’s fun to see the improvement from the same course. Hip-hip-hooray to the following (runners) for having faster times this season: Kelsey Coleman, Casey Hovland, Jake Petrik, Cole Willis, Jake Bear, Ean Charpentier, Kyle Crowell, Alex Fitcha, Joshua Frich, Kyle Granger, Noah Hubbard, Joel Moore, and Zach Peno.”

The North Branch boys and girls cross country teams will compete in the North Suburban Conference Championships at Ponds Golf Course in St. Francis at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16.
