When youths under 12 years old begin stealing from stores or people, vandalizing, beating up other kids or committing other law violations, services designed just for them are hard to come by. Here to meet their needs is the Lakes Area Youth Service Bureau’s Twelve and Under Restorative Justice Program.
The program focuses on giving young people and their families the help they need to get their lives back on track. Together, they learn and understand the consequences of their actions, explore family dynamics and begin to make amends for their actions.
Parents and youths participate in the program, which typically includes five sessions with LAYSB’s youth and family therapist, homework for youths such as an apology letter and a cost analysis of the situation. Parents, law enforcement officers, school districts and court system personnel can refer directly to the program. A weekly parenting meeting is also included in the program.
For cost, more information or to schedule an intake appointment, contact LAYSB at 651-464-3685. The Lakes Area Youth Service Bureau, 244 North Lake St., Forest Lake, serves the area.
