Miska’s 21 saves help national team skate by St. Thomas

Former North Branch hockey goalie Hunter Miska had 21 saves for the U.S. National Under-18 Team that crushed the University of St. Thomas 8-1 in a men’s hockey exhibition game Saturday night, Oct. 27 at Saint Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.

The national team also managed a 2-2 tie Friday night with the University of Minnesota Gophers, which is ranked second in college hockey. Miska’s teammate Thatcher Demko made 39 saves versus the mighty Gophers.

Against the Tommies, Miska faced eight shots in the first period, nine in the second and five in the final session. The goal he allowed was during a power play near the end of the second period.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team, part of USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program based in Ann Arbor, Mich., plays a 50-plus game schedule that includes the top competition from NCAA Division I and III conferences, opponents from the United States Hockey League and three international competitions.
