Tornadoes take wind out of Vikings sails

Top seeded Anoka was crowned the Section 7AAA champion after blowing by the No. 4 seeded North Branch volleyball team 3-0 (12-25, 15-25 15-25) in the section semifinals Oct. 30.

“The Anoka match was definitely a tough way to end the season,” said Vikings coach Hayley Lang. “It was the only three-set beat we had taken all season, and it just felt like we couldn’t find a rhythm. Our girls were ready to go, and we had a plan coming into the match. We had been very well prepared for the opponent and came up short in our serve receive. Our gals normally pass the ball very well, but Anoka had a couple tough servers who continued to mix the depth of the ball, and we just didn’t adapt.”

Added Lang, “It is never easy to end your season, especially with so many talented seniors (Sydney Mueller, Emily Trunk, Taylor Spence, Tayler Fertig, Jessica Merchant, Annamarie Zack, Crystal Emery-Snaza), and it is tough for the younger kids who are used to playing with them as well. We talked a lot about how successful of a season we have had, and to make sure we do not hinge our great successes on only the last match of the season.”

The North Branch volleyball team finished the 2012 season tied for second in the North Suburban Conference with a 6-2 record. The girls finished 14-8 overall.
