Conservation district offers early order discount

Thinking spring already?  Those with non-frost-laden ground on their minds can get a head start on spring by ordering trees and shrubs from the Chisago Soil and Water Conservation District.  The district’s 2013 tree and shrub order form is now available its website or at the office in North Branch.

There are some exciting additions this year.  Last year, the district sold a few species in bundles of five larger sized trees (at least 3 feet tall).  These were so popular that the district has added this option in several other species this year. Large size bundles of white spruce, Norway spruce, black walnut, hackberry, red splendor crabapple and American plum can be ordered.  Order soon; these bundles sell out fast.

There are many other species to choose from in bundles of 25.  These trees start at 10-18 feet, depending on species.  New to the order form this year is white cedar. This is an evergreen tree that is native to northern Minnesota and is also known as arborvitae.

As in years past, the district has offered a tree packet and a shrub packet.  These packets are aimed for people who don’t want to buy 25 trees of the same species.  The packets include four species.  The shrub species this year are silky dogwood, Nanking cherry, common lilac, and rosa rugosa.  In the tree packet, there is white spruce, white pine, white birch, and red maple.  Each packet contains 20 trees (five of each species).

The district also sells some supplies, including marker flags to place next to young trees and shrubs, root dip to help young trees retain moisture, fertilizer packets to drop in when planting trees or shrubs, and Plantskydd to repel deer and rabbits.  These items can be found on the tree and shrub order form.

Each tree or shrub bundle, including the tree packet and the shrub packet, is $27 plus tax.  Those who order before Feb. 22, receive an early order discount of $2 off per bundle.  This discount is only good on tree and shrub bundles (it does not apply to supplies).  To order, pick up an order form at the district office, visit, or call and order with a credit card at 651-674-2333.
