NB boys hockey splits first two games of season

The North Branch boys hockey team opened the 2012-13 season Nov. 27 on its home ice at Chisago Lakes Arena by beating St. Paul Highland Park 5-2.

Alex Miller opened up the scoring in the second period with a goal on an assist from Jared Axberg.

The Scots answered back with a goal of their own.

The Vikings took a 2-1 lead when Miller again found the net, this time on a tip from Tim Courtright.

Axberg wrapped up the second period by scoring on an assist from Kyle Nielsen to give North Branch a 3-1 lead.

Back on the ice for the third period, Ryan Zentner placed the puck in the opponent’s net unassisted, while Axberg scored the final goal for the Vikings with assists by Tim Courtright and Brandon Waldo.

Viking goalie Tyler Byrkit earned the win by stopping 11 of 13 shots on the goal.

Last Thursday, North Branch hosted the Princeton Tigers and fell 11-1.

The team will travel to Rogers Ice Arena to face the Royals 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5 before traveling to the State Fairgrounds Coliseum to face the St. Paul Como Park Cougars 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. The Vikings will then host the Moose Lake Area Rebels (Barnum/Cromwell/Moose Lake-Willow River/East Central) at Chisago Lakes Arena in Lindstrom 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11.
