NB girls take first hoops win; trip to big city next
Last week the North Branch girls basketball team began the 2012-13 season with a home opening win over Cloquet.
The Vikings led 12-11 at the half and extended their lead to win 29-21 over the Lumberjacks.
Sarah Lekson, Haley Huset and Courtney Selbitschka scored six points each. Mikayla Carlson contributed four and Annette Olson three, while Morgen Coleman and Jessica Merchant each were good for two points.
“I thought it was a very typical first game,” said coach Dan Schindler. “Both teams seemed a little nervous at the start. I certainly was happy with our defense and was hoping we would be better offensively. But we missed some easy shots early, and that seemed to affect our shooting the rest of the way. We also struggled more on the free throw line than I expected only going 5-16.
“But we got a win, and it was a section win, so overall we will take it and move on to the next game. Sarah Lekson had 10 rebounds for us and some good steals on our press. Junior Mikayla Carlson and freshman Morgan Coleman saw their first varsity minutes, and I thought both did a nice job. We are hoping they can give us that needed depth we will be looking for this year,” Schindler added.
The North Branch girls basketball team will travel to face the Minneapolis Patrick Henry Patriots at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 before traveling to face the Duluth Denfeld Hunters at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.
