Rush City volleyball 2012 awards

From the Tigers volleyball team, seniors Kayla Forcier and Mackenzie Sherrill earned Academic All-State honors for the 2012 fall season.

“This is only the third and fourth person that I have coached to receive an All State Academic award,” said coach Eric Telander. “The requirements are to have a cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 3.80 and be a senior. Congratulations to Kayla Forcier and Mackenzie Sherrill for being selected to the All State Academic Team.”

Senior Abby Sherer was voted Great River Conference Defensive Player of the Year by the Great River Conference coaches.

Sherrill and Sherer received All-Conference honors, while senior Sierra Schrunk earned All-Conference Honorable Mention.

Scherer also earned Miss Hustle.

“This award is given to the athlete that gave it her all throughout the season,” Telander noted. Whether is was practice or games, “it didn’t matter — she was always giving her best effort, 110 percent. Abby was a hard worker in practice and that transferred over into games as well. She is a very intense player, and that’s what you need to play great defense.”

Kayla Nelson and Summer Garr were recognized for Most Improved.

“This award is given to the athlete that improves the most from the first day of preseason to the final match,” Telander explained. “Although everyone made advances in their play, there were actually two players that stood out and executed their play to a higher level by the end of the year. They really came a long way with their hitting and ball handling skills.”

Teammates also voted for Viola Manske and Kayla Forcier to receive the Spirit Award.

“This award goes to a player whose attitude and enthusiasm never faltered the entire season,” added the coach. “She provided an uplifting and encouraging spirit amongst our team at both practices and during competition. She helped keep things ‘light’ and in perspective, and had fun at volleyball.”
