On Dec. 27 at approximately 8:18 p.m., deputies from the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Fairfield Avenue, just north of Tiger Trail, for a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 24-year-old of Rush City man was driving a vehicle northbound on Fairfield Avenue, just North of Rush City High School, when the vehicle struck a person lying in the middle of the roadway. The driver stopped and called 911 to report the collision. Another vehicle also stopped and its driver attempted first aid until Lakes Region EMS arrived on scene. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian was cooperative throughout the investigation.
The victim was identified as Matthew Jacob Heath, 21, of Rush City.
The Rush City Fire Department, North Branch Police Department, Pine County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol Recon also responded and assisted at the scene.
The case is still under investigation and any criminal charges will be determined when the investigation of the accident is completed. Alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident.
