Viking skaters look to get back on track

The North Branch boys hockey team can’t seem to break its losing streak, which has extended to eight in a row after last week’s games.

In the Wadena-Deer Creek Tournament Dec. 27-28, the team fell to Wadena-Deer Creek 10-3 and then to Pine City/Rush City 5-4 in overtime.

Against the Wolverines, Brandon Kratzke scored an unassisted goal for the Vikings, while Colten Danks scored one goal assisted by Brandon Waldo. Nate Runberg also found the back of the net thanks to assists by Tim Courtright and Waldo.

In the Dragons game, Joey Courtright scored an unassisted goal and one off assists by Connor Martineau and Tim Courtright. Tyler Cashill scored a goal assisted by Waldo, while Kratzke scored assisted by Jared Axberg and T. Courtright.

The team then fell 13-1 to host St. Paul Johnson last Thursday, with the only Viking goal scored by Kaleb Larson off assists by Mitchell Patten and Waldo. The boys also lost in shutouts to Legacy Christian, 7-0, on Friday and Minneapolis, 11-0, on Monday.

The North Branch boys hockey team is fifth in the Two Rivers Conference with a 1-3 conference and 2-12 overall record. The Vikings will travel to Princeton Arena to face Becker/Big Lake at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, before hosting WSFLG (Webster/Siren/Frederic/Luck/Grantsburg) at Chisago Lakes Arena at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15.
