The Pine City boy who was in critical condition following last Thursday’s three-car crash near Maranatha Assembly of God has passed away due to injuries suffered in the wreck.
Bryce Koenig, 15, died Tuesday at the Gillette Children’s Center at Regions Hospital, St. Paul.
Koenig and his mother, Patricia Mabey, 36, were both airlifted to Regions in critical condition Thursday afternoon. According to their CaringBridge page, they were on the way to drop Koenig off at Believers Boxing Gym at Maranatha, located at 24799 Forest Blvd., Forest Lake.
While waiting in the south-bound lane to turn left just after 3:30 p.m. Jan. 3, their Chevy Malibu was struck from behind by a conversion van driven by a Forest Lake man. The collision pushed the Malibu into the northbound lane, where it was struck by another van. Mabey was ejected from the vehicle. The northbound van was driven by a Wyoming man and carried a female from Forest Lake.
According to the CaringBridge site, Koenig was not breathing when emergency responders arrived, and was administered CPR. At Regions, he was put into a medically induced coma the following day, after little to no brain activity was found. Koenig died this Tuesday, and his organs will be donated.
Mabey is expected to make a full recovery, according to the CaringBridge journal.
