Firing on all cylinders

What an exciting year we have had so far at North Branch Area Public Schools We learned last week that Sunrise River Elementary has been selected as a “Celebration School” by the Minnesota Dept. of Education.

Schools that had excellent test scores were invited to apply, and my understanding is that Sunrise, and a few other select schools, were chosen from a pool of roughly 100 schools. We are so honored to be recognized in such a way, and the bulk of the credit belongs to the Sunrise staff, our families, and the school board, which has been very supportive of the school district.

Congratulations to all!

This is just the latest development for NBAPS. Already this year our technology committee was chosen for the Technology Leadership Award from TIES, school board member Kirby Ekstrom was selected as an all-state school board member, and the school district was asked to present our Budget Boot Camp at the Minnesota School Boards Association last week.

Yes, we are an award-winning school district; all of us play a role in that, and all of us should be very proud.

Let’s keep that momentum going!

Schools for Equity in Education is providing a push toward a funding system that is equitable for all school districts. As you know, NBAPS has been on the “losing” end of the funding formula for some time. We have made over $15 million in cuts to programs and staff in the last decade.

You can get involved in making change that benefits our students. Contact your local legislators at least once a week to let them know you want to see equality in school funding. We are also visiting the Capitol Jan. 23 to tell our story.

If you can find some time to volunteer to contact legislators, please call Community Relations Coordinator Patrick Tepoorten at 651-674-1018, or e-mail ptepoorten@northbranch.k12.mn.us and he will assist you with details.
