The North Branch wrestling team racked up 201.5 points to take champion runner-up out of 12 teams in the 55th Annual Grand Rapids Skip Nalan Tournament last Saturday.
Grand Rapids took the championship with 241 points.
Seniors Zack Sundly (195-pound weight class) and Eric Bergstrom (220), as well as junior Seamus Hunter (285) all took champion in their weight divisions.
Hunter continued with his pining prowess, recording his 13th pin in a row. He leads the team with pins this year.
Sundly repeated as a champion, and will have his name added to the list of wrestlers who have won multiple titles at this, the oldest state wrestling tournament.
North Branch head coach and Grand Rapids graduate Jim Hoard is one of the few wrestlers who have won three titles at this tournament in its 55 year history.
Two days before the tournament, the team traveled to face conference rival Benilde-St. Margaret’s and felled the Red Knights 59-12, leaving the team with only one loss (St. Francis) in the North Suburban Conference.
The Guillotine website updated its ranking Jan. 25, and the North Branch team is still named “Lean and Mean,” while Sundly and junior 126-pound weight class wrestler Reid Johnson are both state ranked 10th.
Individual results are posted on Scoreboard Plus on the Post Review’s website.
The North Branch wrestling team will host the Chisago Lakes Wildcats 7 p.m. Jan. 31.
