Free tax preparation 

Volunteers are again ready to help with tax return preparation and filing for seniors and low-to- moderate-income families and individuals.  This service will be available starting Feb. 15 in North Branch, and Feb. 16 in Cambridge. It will continue each Friday [not Good Friday, March 29] and Saturday through the filing deadline in April.

Appointments are required and can be made for the City Center Mall in Cambridge by calling the Senior Activity Center between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  The number to call is 763-689-6555.

Fundraising event for senior center

A fundraising event for the Chisago County Senior Center will take place Feb. 17, 1 to 5 p.m.

The program includes entertainment from Dave Eicholz, a member of the dueling piano’s group “Deuces Wild!,” a silent auction and a pork tenderloin dinner. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children 10 and under. Tickets are available at the senior center, Associated Bank and the North Branch Area Chamber of Commerce.

Monetary donations to the senior center are accepted for those who cannot make the event. For more information, call 651-674-8658.

Defensive driving course

Those who complete this course can save 10 percent on their automobile insurance. The Chisago County Senior Center (6th Ave. and Maple St., North Branch) will be holding an eight-hour driving class for those 55 and older Feb. 19 and 20, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. both nights. The two nights must be completed in order to receive a certificate. The cost is $18 per person, payable cash or check on the first evening. Participants must preregister by 651-674-8658.

Learn about family law

The Refuge Network is sponsoring a free, open to the public, family law clinic Feb. 19, 6 to 8 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Mora, 301 Forest Ave. E. Attendees will learn the basics of family law matters from a presentation, receive helpful materials and have questions answered by an attorney. Also, there will be an opportunity that evening, after the presentation for two individuals to meet with an attorney either from Sieloff & Associates or Bina & Guptil Law Firm for a personal consultation. Consultations will be on a first come, first serve basis.

Love songs

Joyful Voices, a group of singers from North Branch, will give a performance Feb. 20, 1:30 p.m. at the Chisago County Senior Center, 38790 6th Ave., at the We R Able support group gathering.  Darrold Rasmussen directs the group, and the program will include love songs to commemorate Valentine’s Day.

Senior Linkage 

Senior Linkage brings offers a friendly, welcoming place where seniors can get answers to questions relating to growing older.

A representative from the Senior Linkage Line will be available for questions regarding Medicare, SNAP, county assistance, or other community resources Feb. 20, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., at the Chisago County Senior Center.

Diabetic shoe clinic

A diabetic shoe clinic is planned Feb. 21, 1 to 3 p.m. at the Chisago County Senior Center in North Branch.

Medicare and Medical Assistance (sorry, no HMOs) has a benefit for diabetics that covers one pair of therapeutic shoes plus three pair of heat-moldable inserts per calendar year. No doctor visit is necessary. After approval, the shoes will be hand delivered and fitted to those who order them. Participants of this clinic are asked to bring a Medicare card, Humana, UCare, MN or Medical Assistance card, doctors’ names and addresses and secondary insurance cards, if applicable. No appointment is necessary to attend this clinic.

Ski event

We R Able offers a series of supper and ski events this winter. The next event is Feb. 22, 5 p.m., at the St. Croix River Education District building in downtown Rush City.

Scrapbooking workshop

East Central Regional Library presents ‘A Recipe to Remember’ scrapbooking workshop Feb. 23, 10 a.m. at the Pine City Public Library.

Create a scrapbook page to preserve and showcase heirloom recipes. Participants will adorn their scrapbook page with a scanned copy of their relatives’ hand-written recipe, family photos, images from the Minnesota Historical Society’s extensive cookbook and menu collection, and decorative papers.

Build bluebird houses

Build your own bluebird house Feb. 23, 9 a.m. to noon at the Crex Meadows Wildlife Education and Visitor Center.

Join expert Iler Anderson from the Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin as he shares his experiences about bluebirds.

Mystery dinner theater

A comical mystery dinner theater event will be held at Spectacular Events in Isanti Feb. 23, 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $30. Stop by Spectacular Events or call 763-444-9840 for tickets. A silent auction is also planned. All proceeds go toward the New Pathways, Inc. shelter program for homeless families with children.

Painting class 

It has become a tradition with We R Able participants to take a block of time in the early spring to learn how to paint with instructor Sue Wehrenberg.  This year’s series begins Feb. 25, 6:30 to 8:30p.m., at the Chisago Lakes Middle School art room, 13750 Lake Blvd., Lindstrom.

Free Civil War program

What was it like for soldiers fighting during the Civil War? Re-enactor Arn Kind presents a free interactive Civil War experience during this 150th anniversary of the war at the Rush City Library, Feb. 28, 6:30 p.m.  Kind uses artifacts, uniforms, equipment and interactive drills to give his audience a greater understanding of the daily life of a soldier and the tragic consequences of Civil War.

This free event is designed for adults and does not require reservations.

eBook class 

Come to the Chisago Lakes Area Library, 11754 302nd St.  Chisago City, March 1, 2 p.m., to learn the basics of downloading eBooks from the East Central Regional Library’s website in this class.  The class will be an hour demonstration/lecture followed by up to two hours of individual help time.  Participants should bring their own devices, as the instructor will address individual issues during the help time.

Pre-registration is required  A waiting list will be available.  Call the Chisago Lakes Area Library to pre-register at 651-257-2817 or stop by the library.  In the event of unforeseen circumstances such as inclement weather or low registration numbers, the class will be cancelled and may or may not be rescheduled.

New to Medicare session

Going on Medicare soon or just interested in how it works? There will be information on Medicare given out during sessions at Fairview Lakes Medical Center, conference room B, as well as questions answered. Aspects of Medicare Parts A, B, C and D will be covered, as well as information on supplemental insurance to Medicare and how to report Medicare fraud and abuse. There is no cost to these sessions, but registration is required so the proper amount of materials is available. Relay for Life

This year, the American Cancer Society is celebrating 100 years of saving lives. Support the society by becoming a sponsor of Relay for Life in Chisago County.

Maple syrup-collecting workshop

A maple syrup-collecting workshop has been planned at Wild River State Park March 9, 10, 17, 23 and 24, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meet at the visitor center.

As the warmer days and cooler nights begin to make the sap run, it’s time to tap the trees. A limit of 30 participants per date are welcome to learn in-depth and hands-on aspects about the basics of maple syrup collecting through this small-group workshop-style experience. Peer and family support group

A NAMI Connection peer support group for adults recovering from mental illness meets weekly in Cambridge. The free group is sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Minnesota. Trained facilitators who are also in recovery lead NAMI Connection groups. The group meets Thursdays, 6:30 p.m., at Cambridge Medical Center, 701 S.
