Gymnasts earn trips to state competition

The Rush City/Pine City/Hinckley-Finlayson (RC/PC/HF) gymnastics team is heading to state competition after totaling 137.95 points to take the Section 4A Championship Tuesday, Feb. 12 at Chisago Lakes High School.

Sophomore Bailey Murawski (RC), junior Kylee Berube (PC) and senior Cassidy Dunkley (HF) will advance individually. Only the first place team and top four finishers in each event, along with the top four all-around, qualify for state.

Murawski took second on the balance beam, as well as fourth on vault and all-around. Berube placed fourth on uneven bars and beam. Dunkley took second on vault and floor exercise, as well as third on bars and all-around.

Murawski also placed sixth on floor and eighth on bars. Berube placed fifth on floor. Senior Alecia Meier (RC) placed fifth on beam and seventh all-around. Sophomore Katelyn Meier (RC) came in seventh on the vault, and senior Kayla Forcier (RC) finished eighth on the vault.

In addition, the team earned the Gold Award for Academics.

The State High School Girls Gymnastics Class A Championships will be held at University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion with the Team Championship beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, and the Individual Championships beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.

Individual scores will be posted when they are received.

The North Branch gymnastics team racked up 133.95 points to take third place at the Section 4A Championships.

Sophomore Katy Trunk and junior Casey Hovland will advance as individuals to the State Championships. Trunk placed first on vault and floor, and she took second all-around. Hovland placed fourth on the floor exercise.

Trunk also finished sixth on the uneven bars. Seventh grader Alexys Olson just missed advancing when she tied for fourth on the bars, but she ended up with fifth in a tie breaking decision by the head judge. Olson placed seventh on beam, and senior Bayley Ertl finished sixth on the vault.

As a team, the girls earned the Silver Award for Academics.

The State High School Girls Gymnastics Individual Class A Championships will held at University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23. Individual scores will be posted when they are received.
