Spring sports on hold

This year’s late spring and snow cover are holding off the start of spring sports.

The North Branch and Rush City track meets scheduled for Tuesday, April 2 were canceled. Both the North Branch boys tennis meet and baseball game scheduled for this Thursday have been postponed. It remains to be seen if the Vikings softball game scheduled for Saturday will take place as scheduled.

Adapted bowling will start this Friday as scheduled since that is indoors, while the outdoor sports wait for spring to finally arrive and thaw out the fields.

“I don’t recall a spring that had as many events canceled as this one,” said North Branch Activities Director Brett Carlson. “But I have only been doing this job for two years. As a coach for over 10 years, I can’t remember losing an early game due to snow still on the ground.

Carlson added, “Our tennis players and coaches have been working to get the snow shoveled so it will melt faster, but other than some sun light, we are pretty limited. For the fields, we need those to thaw that top layer, too, so they are even more of a work in progress.”
