Laura Aho Bruneaux, much-loved sister, stepmother, grandmother, aunt,great-aunt, and great-great aunt, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at her home in Sunrise Township, on Thursday, Jan. 24. She was 75.
Born and raised on the Iron Range, she graduated as valedictorian of her high school class in Virginia, Minn., went on to the University of Chicago on a scholarship and worked for a time at WTTW in Chicago. She received her teaching degree from St. Cloud State and taught math for many years in both Virginia and Anoka, Minn. After leaving teaching, she worked part time at Ron Holt CPA Ltd.
In August 1973, Laura married Richard Bruneaux and with her marriage was fortunate to gain two sons, Rick and Robert. Laura and Richard were married for 25 years before Richard’s death from Lou Gehrig’s disease. They were both avid antique collectors and spent many pleasant, satisfying hours going to flea markets, garage sales and auctions.
With a mathematician’s mind, Laura found even classes in math theory fascinating. She viewed math as an enjoyable game with a predictable outcome. Needless to say, her memory for detail was superb. Laura was an expert seamstress and knitter, capable of following any pattern no matter how difficult-whether clothes from Vogue patterns or a tour de force knit coat in plaid mohair. Nothing daunted her skill set until increasing arthritis finally curtailed her dexterity.
Born into a politically-conscious family where dinner conversations were often of current events, Laura had a life long interest in politics. She took many courses in political science during and after college, closely followed both national and international affairs and contributed to political campaigns.
Always a great lover of animals, during the course of her life, Laura had many dogs, cats, as well as two horses. She had a Westie terrier and a honey-colored barn cat for company up until her death.
Survivors include her sister, Susan Johnson (Craig); her stepson, Rick Bruneau (Bonnie); a granddaughter; a niece and two nephews; two great nieces; two great nephews; and two great-great nieces.
A memorial service for Laura will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2013, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the home of Susan and Craig Johnson, 13757-400th Street, North Branch, Minn. (Sunrise Township). All friends and family are welcome. Come and share your memories of Laura.
