As part of the “Toward Zero Deaths” campaign, Frank Scherf, northeast Minnesota law enforcement liaison for the state Department of Public Safety, presented North Branch Police Sgt. Rick Sapp (left) and North Branch Police Chief Dan Meyer with a portable PBT outside of the City Council chambers Monday night.
Scherf explained the program used to be called “Safe and Sober,” but changed to Toward Zero Deaths 10 years ago.
Scherf said the Toward Zero Deaths initiative integrates the application of education, enforcement, engineering and emergency medical and trauma services to aid in lowering the number of fatalities on state roadways.
Scherf said well-known factors like drunk driving contribute to many deaths.
