On April 20, 2013 another angel received her wings; Ruby Mae (Schweigert) Hokanson was called home to the Lord. Ruby was born to Mildred (Shimel) and George Schweigert Dec. 5, 1926. She was raised on the family farm in Rush City, Minn.. She graduated from Rush City High School and went to work for the Rush City Hospital. In May of 1948, Ruby married Leo Hokanson and the couple moved to Harris. They later moved to the Hokanson family farm, northeast of Harris, where she spent the rest of her life.
Ruby and Leo had one son, Kelly. In 1966, Leo became disabled because of rheumatoid arthritis and Ruby spent the next 20 years caring for Leo, who had become dependent on a wheelchair.
Ruby had many hobbies: crocheting hats and mittens for the needy, making quilts with ladies from the church, and making nursery caps for infants. Ruby was very involved with the First Lutheran Church of Harris.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents Mildred and George Schweigert, husband Leo Hokanson, brothers George Schweigert and Earl Schweigert; sister Betty (Schweigert) Barthel. She is survived by her son Kelly Hokanson and his wife Kelly, of Harris; brother Floyd (Marcia) Schweigert, of Cushing; Okla.;, sisters-in-law Dorethy Schweigert, of Laurie, Mo., and Mavis Schweigert, of Rush City, Minn.; her brother-in-law Don Barthel, of Albertville, Minn., many nieces and nephews, family and friends.
Rev. Therese Helker will officiate at a memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday, April 26 at the First Lutheran Church of Harris. A time of visitation is planned for one hour prior to the service at church. Music will be provided by Carolyn Holmstrom. Honorary casket bearers include the Harris American Legion Auxiliary. The inurnment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery of Harris.
