Richard L. Gjertson, 69, of Harris, passed away peacefully surrounded by family April 28, 2013 at the Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis.
Survived by wife, Lillis; son, Jeff, of St. Paul; daughters, Jennifer (Curt) Friemann, of Inver Grove Heights; and Jennifer (Jim) McGill, of Stacy; brother, Carl (Janice), of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; nine grandchildren and many dear friends and family. Richard is preceded in death by son, Erik and parents, Carl and Emma. Richard was born in 1943 in Forest Lake during a blackout during World War II. He grew up in the Como area of St. Paul and graduated from Murray High School in 1961. He joined the Marine Reserves, and worked at Burlington Northern Railroad for 30 years. After retiring from the Railroad, he enjoyed working part time at People’s Bank in Cambridge. Throughout his life, his passions included golf, fast pitch softball, bowling, horseshoes, fishing and hunting. He was a huge history buff, particularly interested in World War II.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4 at Grandstrand Funeral Home in North Branch with Rev. Dwayne Gibson officiating. Serving as organist and soloist was Cathie Hendren. Casket bearers were Jerry Otto, Tom Policone, Austin Ross, Curt Friemann, John Printon and Jeff Gjertson. Visitation was held Friday, May 3 at the funeral home and also one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Interment followed the service at Fish Lake Lutheran Cemetery at Harris.
