Glennys J. Smith, 92, of North Branch, died Saturday, May 18, 2013 at her residence.
Glennys was born Feb. 21, 1921 in Sunrise to parents Glenn and Elsa (Steinke) Clover. She attended school in North Branch where she graduated with the class of 1939. Glennys worked at the Cambridge State Hospital before entering the U.S. Navy during World War II serving as a Pharmacist’s Mate. Upon her discharge from the Navy she worked at the Arsenal and later attended the Minnesota School of Business. She worked as a nurse’s assistant and also worked in the kitchen at the North Branch elementary school for several years. She married James Smith on June 28, 1947 at the First Lutheran Church in Harris. Glennys loved reading, the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, watching golf as well as knitting. She made caps, booties and blankets that were donated to charitable hospitals and given to the newborns. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Glennys is survived by her daughters, Nancy Ryan, of North Branch, and Pam (John) Goranson, of Golden Valley; grandchildren, Anne (Brett) Ryan Fricke and Chris (Amy) Ryan; great granddaughter, Ciara, and a sister-in-law, Pat Smith, of Canyon Lake, Texas; and nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, James and brother, LeRoy.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 22 at Trinity Lutheran Church in North Branch with Rev. Gary Guptill officiating. Serving as organist was Deb Aulich; Jon Ekstrom served as soloist. Visitation was held on one prior to the service at church. Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
