Andrea P. Grote, 47, of North Branch, died Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at her home with her family by her side following an 18-month struggle with cancer.

Andrea was born Jan. 3, 1966 in Riverside, Calif. to parents Harry and Susan (Theobald) Mares.  She attended Parkview Elementary School in White Bear Lake and White Bear Lake Area School, graduating in 1984.  She attended Bemidji State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree.  She later received her master’s degree from the University of St. Thomas.  Andrea married Kevin Grote Aug. 5, 1989 at St. Pius the Tenth Catholic Church in White Bear Lake.  Andrea started teaching at North Branch Area Schools in 1988 as the French teacher.  She was named the Teacher of the Year in 2003 and was instrumental in organizing and running the Detention Debut Variety Show for student scholarships.  She loved reading, game shows, playing cards and games and the Minnesota Twins. Her love in life was her husband Kevin and her children, Kyle and Kallie.

Andrea is survived by her husband, Kevin; son, Kyle and daughter, Kallie; father, Harry (Geri) Mares, of Wild Rose, Wis.; grandparents, Gilbert and Margaret Theobald, of Rochester; her siblings, Jane (Paul) Skinner, of Coon Rapids; Jon (Jennifer) Mares, of Andover; James (Laurie) Mares, of Woodbury; Melissa (Richard) Barrette, of Lansing, Kan., Michelle Ewald, of Andover; Michael Arnold, of Brisbane, Australia; Sarah (Josh) Watters, of Prior Lake; Stuart (Jody) Grote, of Richfield; CariAnn (Darin) Squier, of Hutchinson; and Chris (Jennifer) Grote, of Eden Prairie; mother in law, Essene Grote, of Waconia; and many nieces, nephews and friends.  Andrea is preceded in death by her mother, Susan (Theobald) Mares, Grandparents, Phil and Germaine Mares, Jerald Grote and Bernard and Frances Van Bree.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 25 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in North Branch with Fr. Shane Wasinger officiating.  Music was provided by Cathie Hendren, Mindy Lattimore and Andy Spofford.  Visitation was held Friday, May 24 at the North Branch Area High School Auditorium, 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service.  Family interment was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in North Branch.  Serving as casket bearers were Chris Grote, Stuart Grote, James Mares, Jon Mares, Paul Skinner and Darin Squier.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to a scholarship that is being setup in Andrea’s name.
