North Branch freshman Nick Kress and junior John Buboltz advanced to the Section 7AAA Boys Golf Championship finals last week at Grand National in Hinckley, where Kress earned his way to the State tournament.
Buboltz and Kress each shot a 76 in the section preliminaries to advance to the sectional finals in the 18-hole event.
Kress was able to play through the rain and wind last Thursday in the finals to shoot a 74 (150 total), placing third overall and earning his first invitation to the State golf tournament.
Buboltz carded a 77 (153 total) in his final round to place 11th and was only a few shots from qualifying as well.
For Kress, he worked hard over the past year to improve his game with the help of his father, who is also his coach, along with Brett Harper at Xplode Fitness to increase his power.
“The ECM Post Review wrote an article on Nick last summer after he won three PGA Junior Tour golf tournaments in a week,” said Andrew Kress. “It also mentioned that he missed qualifying for State by four shots as an eighth grader. One of Nick’s goals was to make the State golf tournament all four years in high school. So far, like the title of the article, this young golfer appears to be on the right track.”
Also competing for North Branch in the section preliminaries were Regan Nelson who carded an 82 for 39th; Rob Hansen, 90, for 62nd; and Joey Courtright and Cole Pearson, 91 each, for 65th.
Viking golfer Nick Kress will be competing in the State High School Boys Golf Championships at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 11 and Wednesday, June 12.
