Hazel I. Van Reese, 85, of North Branch, died Saturday, July 20, 2013 at her residence.
Hazel was born March 30, 1928 in Kinnebec, S.D. to parents Nels and Ruth (Harmon) Nelson. She moved with her family to Grantsburg, Wis. in 1936. She attended school in Grantsburg and graduated from there in 1946. Hazel then attended nurse’s training in Minneapolis and worked as a nurse for a short time. Hazel would later take a secretarial job with Stremal Brothers in Minneapolis and worked there for 31 years until her retirement. She married Howard Buggert in 1947, and he later died in 1957. Hazel married Gerald Van Reese in 1977, and they have made their home in North Branch since 1982. Hazel loved cooking, sewing, camping and traveling as well as dancing and tending to her flower garden. She also had a great love for her family and animals.
Hazel is survived by her husband, Gerald; daughter, Lori (Tom) Kryzsko, of White Bear Lake; her granddaughter, Cassie Kryzsko; and her sister, Pearl Bistram of Grantsburg, Wis; her caregiver and friend, Jackie Higgins, of North Branch; and several nieces and nephews. Hazel is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Laura Nelson and Violet Olson; brothers, Laurel Nelson and Arthur Nelson and first husband, Howard Buggert.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at the Grandstrand Funeral Home in North Branch with Chaplain Todd Carlson officiating. Music was provided by Cathie Hendren. Interment followed the service at Riverside Cemetery in Grantsburg, Wis. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Tuesday. Serving as casket bearers were staff from St. Croix Hospice.
