RC volleyball advances to north semis

Tigers defeat Milaca in four sets

 It was an eventful, but successful night of volleyball Oct. 24 for the Rush City volleyball team.

The Tigers competed in their first round of Section 5AA volleyball against fifth-seeded Milaca at home, defeating the Wolves in four sets, winning by two points in each.

Rush City, which earned the fourth seed, took the first set 26-24. They won another close one in set two, 25-23, before letting up in the third and falling 25-13.

The Tiger girls repeated their earlier performance in set four to take the set and match, 26-24.

Sophomore outside hitter Summer Garr took charge on offense, totaling 10 kills as well as 17 digs on defense, second only to sophomore libero Sammi Herberg in the back row with 19 digs and two aces.

Sophomore Lindsey Williams tallied four kills, 1.5 blocks, four digs and one ace, while junior middle hitter Kayla Nelson shut down the Wolves’ offense with five blocks to accompany three kills.

Sophomore setter Sydnie Sybrant tallied 13 set assists and two aces, while senior Jessica Bottomley added nine digs on defense.

The win advanced the Tigers into the semifinals of the north division in Section 5AA play. They faced the north’s No. 1 seed, Park Center, Tuesday night on the road, with the winner going on to face either Fridley (third seed) or Zimmerman (second seed) at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Michael-Albertville.
