Vikings score three in loss

The North Branch boys hockey team fell in its home opener to Richfield, 7-3, on Monday, Nov. 25.

The Vikings fell behind early, trailing 3-1 at the close of the first period. Freshman T.J. Reis scored the lone goal off a pas from freshman Ryan Byrkit nine minutes into the game.

North Branch opened the second period with an early power-play goal by Connor Martineau off a pass from senior Joey Courtright to bring their squad within a goal at 3-2.

But Richfield would go on a scoring spree through the second period to take a 6-2 lead before the second break.

Just 11 second into the third period, sophomore Brandon Waldo laced a shot from out front to close the scoring for the Vikings on the night. Richfield would score once more late in the game for the 7-3 victory.

The Vikings spent just four minutes in the penalty box due to minor penalties and took 23 shots on goal compared to Richfield’s 48 shots. Senior Tyler Byrkit recorded a 41 saves on the night.

North Branch is 1-1 and travels to St. Paul Como Park for an 8 p.m. game Thursday, Dec. 5.
