Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!—
It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve the great people of Chisago County for another year in St. Paul. I have to say, I serve one of the best districts in the state. Folks in our area come together in awe-inspiring ways to foster a true sense of community, and for that I am thankful.
Chisago County is a unique district with a strong Swedish heritage. This heritage is prevalent with many shops, statues and historic sites in the Swedish sister cities that run along Highway 8 (the Vilhelm Moberg Commemorative Trail). Where else are you so lucky to find Sweden in Minnesota, other than in our own back yard?
Our beautiful topography and scenic river views reminded emigrants of their home land. It was one of the major attractions that convinced them to settle in the area. But life wasn’t always so serene. Homesteading the land was a lot of work, as was battling the elements.
The good folks of Chisago County have kept the Swedish emigrant spirit alive. I invite you this holiday season to take a stroll down some of our main streets and remember the men and women who, not too long ago, took a chance on a better life and helped make Chisago County what it is today.
You can learn more about the major historic sites around the county on The Swedish Circle Tours website (www.swedishcircletours.com). Different towns have heritage associations and the Chisago County Historical Society has great resources about the area.
Outside of the district, you can visit the American Swedish Institute (www.asimn.org) in Minneapolis or log on to ExploreMinnesota.com for a Swedish Heritage Itinerary that includes several stops in and around Chisago County.
Thank you to everyone who has contacted my office throughout the year. Your input is always welcome and appreciated, and it helps me better serve you. Please keep the comments and questions coming, and I look forward to communicating with you!
God jul och gott nytt år!
