Shafer man, 63, killed in snowmobile crash

A 63-year-old Shafer man was killed in a snowmobile crash late Saturday morning, Dec. 21 at a residence in Franconia Township near Shafer.

According to a press release:

The Chisago County Sheriff’s Office received word of a snowmobile crash with injuries through a 911 call at about 11:20 a.m. Deputies, Lakes Region EMS and Shafer first responders were dispatched to the scene where David Holt, the operator of the snowmobile, was not breathing after the accident, and CPR was started by a witness.

Medical care was turned over to the first responders, and CPR continued for some time. Lifesaving efforts were not successful, and Holt was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to witnesses, he was moving a snowmobile that he was not familiar with. At one point, the snowmobile appeared to accelerate rapidly until it struck a car hauler type trailer parked near his driveway.

The snowmobile had a left handed throttle installed, which appears to be a contributing factor in this accident. Alcohol or drugs are not suspected.

The accident is under investigation by the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office.
