Tigers 2-0 in dual meets
The Rush City-Braham wrestling team had a busy week. They defeated Cloquet-Esko, 49-27, last Tuesday before competing in the Chisago Lakes Invite on Friday, where they placed fifth of nine teams.
The host team took the title with 214 points, followed by Rogers (172.5 points), Goodhue (168), Henry Sibley (160) and Rush City (125).
Leading the Tigers in points at Chisago Lakes was junior Jacob Lynch, who took first place at 220 pounds to give his squad 24 points. Lynch won by fall in both his quarterfinal and semifinal matches, then won 10-2 over Rogers in the title match.
Junior Dominic Montgomery earned 20 points with a second-place finish at 160 pounds after winning by fall in the semifinals over Henry Sibley, then falling to Mark Sontag of Chisago Lakes by major decision in the first-place match.
Junior Blaine Blazek, junior Luke Rands and senior Tyler Sitz all took third place. Blazek scored 15 team points at 170 pounds, winning by fall in both his quarterfinal match against North St. Paul and in his final match against the host team. Sitz scored 13 points, winning by decision in his opening match, then by fall over Robbinsdale Armstrong for third place at 132 pounds. Rands tallied 10 points. The 182-pounder earned a bye in the first round, lost his semifinal match, then won by major decision in the third-place match over Chisago Lakes.
Junior Brian Nelson placed fourth on the day for nine team points at 138 pounds, while eighth-grader Dylan Martin (113 pounds) and freshman Dylan Mielke (126 pounds) both placed fifth and earned 10 team points each. Seventh-grader Jacob Johnson also placed fifth for seven points at 106 pounds.
Next, the Tigers travel to Mora for an invite on Saturday, Jan. 4.
