NB basketball boys fall in close ones
The Vikings lost two games on the road last week, starting at Chisago Lakes, where the boys fell 74-65. Senior Travis Van Elsberg led the scoring effort with 19 points, while senior Dylan Dahle put up 15. Junior Kyle Burnside earned a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Two days later, the Vikings lost a heartbreaker in overtime after leading 37-28 at halftime. Van Elsberg had a standout night with 28 points and team-high six assists, while Burnside recorded another double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Dahle put up 13 points while senior Brandon Thauwald added 10 points and seven rebounds. The Vikings are 2-7 overall and next travel to South St. Paul for a holiday tournament Friday, Dec. 27.
Viking wrestlers fall to Mora,
The North Branch wrestling squad hosted two duals last week, losing 51-24 to Mora last Tuesday and 42-33 to Chisago Lakes Thursday. In the matchup against Mora, seniors Aaron Fitchka (132 pounds), Aaron Senne (152) and Seamus Hunter (285) each won by fall, while freshman Ryan Senne (106) and senior Tristan LaBelle (182) won by decision. Against the Wildcats two days later, Aaron Senne, LaBelle, senior Mitch Anderson (195) and Hunter earned pins while juniors Kody Strohmayer (120), Cameron Sampson (145) and Arik Steele (160) won by decision. Next, the Vikings travel to Cambridge-Isanti for an invite on Saturday, Jan. 4.
RC basketball boys recap
The Rush City basketball boys traveled to the St. John’s Prep tournament last week, where they lost 73-70 to Browerville on Thursday and fell 73-51 to Milaca on Friday. On Saturday, the Tigers faced St. Cloud Christian and won, 72-38. Junior Dylan Fessenden led his team with 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Freshman Tyler Oscarson earned 15 points and five rebounds while senior Brandon Koehnle added 14 points and four assists. Koehnle was also named to the all-tournament team. Next, the Tigers host Aitkin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3.
Pine City-Rush City hockey boys go 2-1
The Dragons fell in a close game, 3-2, to Cambridge-Isanti at home last Tuesday, but they came back to win 7-1 over St. Paul Highland Park last Thursday. Pine City-Rush City also defeated Ely-Northeast Range on Friday, 8-0. The Dragons are 3-9 overall, 0-4 in the section and 2-3 in conference play. Next, they travel to Princeton to play at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3.
NB gymnasts record win
The Viking gymnastics team earned another win last Thursday, this time defeating Monticello, 137.095-127.325. Next, North Branch travels to Chisago Lakes for a 6:30 p.m. meet Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Tiger ballers add two more wins
The Rush City girls basketball team notched two wins at home last week with a 53-48 victory over Frederic Tuesday and a 50-34 win over Pine City Thursday. The Tigers are 4-1 overall, 2-1 in the section and 3-0 in the Great River Conference.
