Vikings fall to St. Francis, Zimmerman, Rogers
It was a tough week for the North Branch girls basketball team, who dropped games to St. Francis, Zimmerman and Rogers.
After losing 47-30 on the road to the Fighting Saints on Thursday, the Vikings hosted Zimmerman in an early afternoon matchup on Saturday.
The Vikings trailed at halftime, 34-28, but made a run in the second half to lead 43-40 with 10 minutes remaining in the game in what would be a back-and-forth battle.
North Branch would score two easy jumpers from the right side to take a 48-42 lead at the eight-minute mark, but the Thunder crawled back in, nailing a 3-pointer and driving to take a 49-48 lead.
With 3:44 to go, Zimmerman extended its lead to 54-48. Junior Sarah Davis provided a spark for the Vikings by sinking a long ball from the right wing to bring North Branch within three points, followed by two shots from the charity stripe by senior Haley Huset to make it a one-point game, 54-53, with three minutes remaining.
Zimmerman answered with two points of their own, and then, by a short jumper down low by junior Taylor Gazda, made it a 56-55 game with two minutes left.
After a scoreless minute of play, North Branch put the visitors on the line with 58 seconds to go, giving Zimmerman a 57-55 lead.
North Branch missed two shots in the lane on the next two possessions, forcing them to foul until the close of the 61-55 Zimmerman win.
Gazda led the Vikings with 15 points and eight rebounds. Huset recorded 11 points, four rebounds and three steals while Davis put up nine points. Junior Hailey Corner tallied eight points and six rebounds, followed by sophomore Morgen Coleman with six points, seven rebounds and five steals. Sophomore Courtney Selbitschka added four points, five rebounds and three steals.
The Vikings traveled to Rogers on Monday night, where they lost 69-47.
North Branch is now 9-8 on the season and 1-5 in the Mississippi 8 Conference. The squad sits seventh of 10 in the conference, with St. Michael-Albertville leading the way at 8-0 and 14-4 overall.
