Vikings beat Duluth Denfeld, lose to Cloquet—

It was a split for the North Branch boys basketball team last week.

The Vikings traveled to Duluth Denfeld on Friday and won 73-67 before coming home the next day to face Cloquet. North Branch lost by a narrow 52-48 margin.

North Branch had a consistent showing at Duluth, where they led 37-33 at halftime and held on in the second half for the win.

Senior Travis Van Elsberg put on a show on both ends of the court, leading his squad with 27 points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks.

Senior Brandon Thauwald put up 13 points, five rebounds and five assists, followed by junior Kyle Burnside with 10 points and five rebounds. Junior Matt Blomquist added eight points, while senior Dillon Harms contributed six points.

In the loss to Cloquet the Vikings trailed by 10 points, 25-15, at the break but came back to outscore the visiting team 33-27 in the second half for a near comeback.

Van Elsberg again led North Branch, this time with 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals, followed by seniors Dylan Dahle and Harms with eight points apiece. Blomquist put up seven points, while Burnside added five points and seven rebounds.

North Branch is 7-14 overall and 2-8 in the Mississippi 8 Conference.

Next, the Vikings travel to St. Francis for a 7:15 p.m. game on Thursday, Feb. 13.
