North Branch FIRST Tech Challenge Team 7290 competed in the State Championships on Saturday, February 22, 2014 in Prior Lake. Thirty-six teams qualified for the state meet during qualification tournaments held November through January. Competition was fierce and even though they posted some of their highest point totals of the season, Team 7290 was only able to post one win on the day and did not advance to the elimination round. North Branch had three FTC teams for this inaugural season. Team 7290 received the FTA Award, which is given to the team that exemplifies excellent performance in the competitive area. Team 7290 was instrumental in discovering a problem with the competition field during a competition.

“It was a great first experience for all of the 7th and 8th grade students who participated,” Team Leader Becky Leuer said. None of us knew quite what to expect, but everyone is excited for next year. Interest in this program is very high, and if we can find funding for 1-2 more teams we would like to expand the program.”

The challenge for 2013-2014 was to build an 18 X 18 inch robot that would move blocks, raise a flag and hang on a bar. The 2014-15 season kicks off the Saturday after Labor Day.  Anyone interested in sponsoring a team, joining a team, or being a mentor should contact Becky Leuer at bleuer@northbranch.k12.mn.us or call 651-674-1024.
