There may be snow still on the ground, but planting season is right around the corner.
Time is running out for ordering trees and shrubs through the Chisago Soil & Water Conservation District. The tree and shrub order form is available on the district’s website or at it’s office in North Branch. The pick up dates are tentatively scheduled for April 24, 25, and 26.
There will be bundles of five large-sized tree and shrub species. These trees are 36 inches or taller. The district has already sold out of several of these species and is running low on the others, so be sure to call in as soon as possible for the best chance at getting these trees.
There are many other species to choose from in bundles of 25. These trees start at 10-18 inches, depending on species. There are a nice variety of evergreen species, including Norway Spruce, White Spruce, Red Pine, and White Pine. The Red (Norway) Pine is Minnesota’s state tree.
The list of deciduous trees and shrubs is too long for this article, but there is a great selection. Check out the order form for the complete list and for details on each tree species. Information includes average height, growth rate, growing requirements, and fall color.
For those who are looking for salt-tolerant species to plant along roadways, some great options include White Oak and Rosa Rugosa. These species are available through the 2014 tree and shrub sale.
The district also sells supplies, including marker flags to place next to young trees and shrubs, root dip to help young trees retain moisture, fertilizer packets to drop in when the tree or shrub is planted, and Plantskydd to repel deer and rabbits. These items can also be found on the tree and shrub order form.
Each tree or shrub bundle is $28.00 plus tax. To order, pick up an order form at the North branch office, visit www.chisagoswcd.org, or call in an order with a credit card at 651-674-2333.W
