Kevan Swenson is the 2014 Midsummer Days Parade grand marshal

When Kevan Swenson recalled his years with North Branch American Legion Post 85, he laughed a bit and said, “I’ve held every post except treasurer.”

Swenson, a 1968 North Branch High School graduate, is a lifelong resident of North Branch and a Vietnam War veteran, and he’s served the country in the Air Force and Minnesota National Guard.

In all, he has 24 years of service with the armed forces.

Swenson has been a member of Post 85 for 43 years, serving as its commander for a stint in the 1970s, and he’s also been a member of North Branch VFW Post 6424.

“I’ve been active and I’ve stayed active,” Swenson said of his involvement with the Legion, noting the Memorial Day services the Legion participates in every year have always been special for him. “I’ve been through the ropes and the chain of command in the Legion.”

Last year, Swenson was named the Post’s Legionnaire of the Year.

“That was quite an honor,” Swenson said.

Swenson said he’s also honored to be named this year’s grand marshal, a title he found out he’d be receiving at the last Legion meeting.

Swenson said he has many fond memories of Midsummer Days and its parade, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday.

This year, Swenson said, he and his three grandchildren will be heading down the parade route in a truck and tossing candy out to kids who line up along the roadside to get a good view of the festivities.

“It will be nice to have my grandkids help me,” he said. “We should all have fun.”
