The Rush City School Board on June 19 approved extracurricular assignments, such as head and assistant coaches, for the 2014-15 school year.
With Kevin Smith retiring after a 38-year teaching and coaching career at Rush City High School, Mike Vaughan will become varsity head coach for cross-country. The move means the assistant coach position is open.
Paul Kirby will remain head coach of the varsity football team, with Jeremy Albright and Joe Lattimore coming back as assistant coaches and Brody Bakken replacing Mike O’Donnell as the third assistant coach. In eighth-grade football, Gary Wendorf will replace Lee Rood as coach, since Rood is taking over as athletic director due to the retirement of Bob Schlagel. Kim Erdman will continue to coach seventh-grade football.
Volleyball coaches will remain the same as last year, though the eighth-grade coach position is open, with Michelle Kirby not returning. At the varsity level, Eric Telander returns as head coach; Erika Matzke, junior varsity coach; Charlotte Thill, C team coach; and Robin Schellbach, seventh-grade coach.
No coaching changes are expected in boys basketball, as varsity head coach Jeremy Albright will be assisted by Joe Lattimore. Other returning coaches include Larry Schlagel, C team; Paul Kirby, seventh grade; and Mike Vaughan, eighth grade.
The varsity girls basketball team once again will be led by Joe Nelson as head coach and Erika Matzke as assistant coach. While Brekka Giller is set to assume her post as eighth-grade coach, Craig Mell is not anticipated to return to coach seventh grade. Coaching spots for seventh-grade and C team ball are open.
Andrew Hackenmueller will return as head coach in varsity wrestling, and varsity baseball will be coached by former assistant Grant Nicoll, who is replacing Kevin Smith. As a result, the assistant coaching spot remains open for next year.
Also returning to their usual coaching duties are Jeremy Albright and Charlotte Thill in varsity golf; Kim Erdman and Lee Rood, softball; Mike Vaughan, Erika Matzke and Mark Bingham, track; and Diane Meier and Keith Beleau, gymnastics.
