Suspect currently in custody in Isanti County
Those who live near 400th Street and Golden Avenue in North Branch likely noticed an increased police presence in the area around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
According to information from the North Branch Police Department, authorities from North Branch, the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office and even a K-9 unit from Forest Lake were searching for Nicholas Bassett, 25, of Pine City.
An anonymous person called police July 17 to report that Bassett was seen walking along the train tracks adjacent to County Road 30.
When police responded to the area, Bassett ducked into a nearby cornfield to escape. He was able to vacate the area before police were able to set up a perimeter.
North Branch Police arrested Basset the next day at 7:10 p.m. after receiving a tip that he might be hiding in or near the trailer park east of Peterson’s Mill.
An officer pulled Bassett’s vehicle over as he attempted to leave the trailer park to head north on County Road 30 and arrested him without incident.
He was then transported to the Isanti County Jail.
There was a felony warrant for his arrest out of Isanti County.
In Isanti County District Court Feb. 12, Bassett was charged with three felonies: third-degree drug possession, methamphetamine; fifth-degree drug possession, marijuana; third-degree burglary; two misdemeanors: intentional property damage and pharmacy — possess, control, manufacture, sell, furnish or dispense (drugs) — and one petty misdemeanor: possession of drug paraphernalia.
A warrant for his arrest on those charges was issued June 25 after he failed to appear for a court hearing that day.
He also had a warrant out for his arrest in Washington County for providing a police officer a fake ID Dec. 13, 2013. He didn’t attend his court hearing July 7 on that charge, and the warrant was issued on the same day.
Bassett’s previous convictions include third-degree burglary in Pine County, underage drinking and driving in Kanabec County, fifth-degree assault in Mille Lacs County and illegal possession of a firearm in Mille Lacs County.
