The man who stole a car this morning in North Branch at gunpoint is dead after being shot by police, according to a press release from the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office.
At about 7:41 a.m., Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to assist the North Branch Police Department with a suspicious person call that had evolved into a carjacking of a black 2014 Chevy Impala. Surrounding agencies, including the Minnesota State Patrol, were notified.
At about 9:51 a.m., the suspect called OnStar and requested someone come and get his daughter, and he was making suicidal threats.
The suspect had his 7-year-old daughter with him at the time of the carjacking. At that time, law enforcement was unable to locate the vehicle or the person involved.
A short time later, the suspect was located in rural Fish Lake Township, outside the city of Harris. Law enforcement officers on scene fired shots. The suspect died at the scene. The name of the suspect is being withheld at this time pending notification of relatives.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting the investigation.
