The Local Bar and Grill located on Stark Road in Harris was bought in 2013 by Mark Radeck and Danielle Wilcox. They spent over three years updating the building formerly known as Pace’s Tavern.
“We did all of the remodeling ourselves between Mark and I and our families,” Wilcox said.
The rustic decor is custom woodwork throughout the bar and restaurant. The Local offers rotating local Minnesota draft beer selections from Castle Danger Brewery in Two Harbors, Indeed Brewing Company, and Surly Brewing Company, both of which are in Minneapolis.
“All of our tap beers are local, and our cheese is also made in Minnesota,” Wilcox said.
The dressings at the Local are homemade. The syrup used in cocktails is also homemade. Other items on the menu include rustic flatbread pizza, a variety of chicken wings, appetizers and burgers.
“Our burgers are smash style, and not a lot of places do that,” Wilcox said. “What that means is you ball the burger and put it on the grill and smash it within 30 seconds of putting it on. It’s called the maillard reaction, like when you sear a steak. It seals in the juices.”
The buns for the sandwiches and hamburgers come from the Rush City Bakery, and the Local gets fresh beef from White Bear Lake. Also, they get their rye whiskey, gin and bourbon from Isanti Spirits.
“As far as I know, we are the only bar and restaurant to carry Isanti Spirits, which is distilled in Isanti County by Rick Schneider,” Wilcox said.
The Local Bar and Restaurant is open Thursday and Friday from 4 to 10 p.m., Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. p.m., and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m.
“We plan on having a few bands come in for entertainment, and we have DJs once in a while from KBEK radio,” Wilcox said. “Eventually, we’d like to do something with the outside of the restaurant as well.”
