The North Branch Taekwando Academy’s competition team, Team Discipline, brought home many awards from the 2017 Tournament of Champions in Maple Grove Sept. 23.
Competitions were held in pattern and sparring. Team Discipline was particularly strong in pattern, with 12 competitors taking first place in their division.
“These kids have really been working hard at paying attention to the details in their technique and it paid off,” said Team Discipline coach Heath Fonnest. “That is about as close to dominating an event as it comes.”
Brooke Hegge took first in pattern, which advanced her to the Grand Championship round to compete against other division champions.
“Brooke was on her game today, and her technique was spot on,” Fonnest said. “I knew she would be winning a Grand Championship in the future and today was the day.”
Team Discipline members Autumn Hutchinson, Karen Yang, Justin Kenny and Aidan Fonnest all took first in pattern and first in sparring in their divisions.
“All four of these competitors’ goal was to win the gold in both events and all four of them got to go home having reached their goal,” Fonnest said. “Everyone did great today and made me one proud coach.”
