NB aims to make it easier to bring businesses to town

That the North Branch Council is eagerly promoting the city as a "business friendly" place for new business is apparent when one sits in on a council meeting these days. Having hired Tom Willett as EDA director, things are moving swiftly in attempts to make the city more appealing to new business and industry.

Rush City bar will stay open
A month ago, the Rush City Council was making plans to close the municipal bar. The liquor committee had been instructed to seek costs for walling off and diverting heat from the on-sale portion of the city's liquor operations. The feeling of the council was that the bar was costing the city in the neighborhood of $20,000 - 25,000 in expenses.

More RC students feel teachers respect them - Survey results delayed due to computer glitch

Due to an e-mail glitch, the Rush City School District did not receive its 2007 Minnesota Student Survey results until last week.

As with its counterpart to the south, the Rush City School District did not participate in the survey in 2004. Having participated in 2007 and in 2001 though, comparisons can be made about behavioral changes over the last six years.

Unfortunately, Rush City's 2001 student survey results are not broken out by gender, so it is impossible to make trend comparisons by gender.

Rush City enacts fire charge

bcar1.jpgThe Rush City Council held a public hearing on Monday night, in advance of passing an ordinance establishing a minimum $500 fire charge for residents living in Rush City's fire coverage area. The charge, approved by the council, will affect residents living in Rush City, all of Rushseba Township and Rock Creek, as well as those portions of Nessel, Fish Lake, and Royalton townships that contract with the Rush City Fire Department.

At the public hearing Monday night, Rush City Fire Chief Bob Carlson explained what the $500 charge would cover, and noted that the funds would be earmarked solely for the fire equipment fund.

Skating rinks open in Harris

Hans Brinker wannabees in the Harris area should sharpen their blades and get ready to enjoy the outdoors.

The ice skating rink on Stark Road in Harris will have a grand opening on Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m. There will be music and refreshments. Everyone is invited.

NB School district reacts to student survey

After summarizing the results of the district's Minnesota Student Survey at the Jan. 10 meeting of the School Board, North Branch Director of Teaching and Learning Jan Ashlin concluded, "Ninth- and twelfth-grade females are a real at-risk population."

Ashlin focused on just a sampling of categories from the survey (see last week's article titled "New survey shows more NB students want to go to college" for an in-depth look), but those samplings were enough to bolster her conclusion.
