Coleman/Franken recount underway

recount1.jpg The historic statewide recount to determine the U.S. Senate race between Norm Coleman and Al Franken got underway on Wednesday, Nov. 19. In Chisago County, three tables were set up with two ballot counters and two candidate representatives per table.

As of 2:30 p.m. roughly nine precincts had been counted with six ballots challenged. At the end of the day, 14 were complete, and Coleman had lost one vote while Franken had lost five.

County Auditor DennisFreed thought the county's 24 precincts could be completed by the end of the day Thursday, but is prepared to continue Friday morning if need be. See the Secretary of State Web site for recount updates as they become available.

No more crossing guard at 95 and Grand
Effective Monday, Nov. 17, the North Branch School District will no longer station a crossing guard at the intersection of Hwy. 95 and Grand Avenue. The intersection has crosswalk markings on the pavement and four-way stop signs. Students are cautioned to use care when crossing, and to cross where there is a crosswalk designation or crossing guard. For more, see the district Web site.
