The
North Branch Dance Team had its strongest performances of the
season at the Section 2AA meet held in North Branch on Feb. 9. The
girls placed 5th in kick and 6th in jazz out of a field of 13
competitors. The kick team narrowly missed 4th place after a tie
breaker had to be done between North Branch and Duluth Central.

The Rush City boys basketball team has won three of their last four
games and are looking to sharpen their tools for the upcoming section
playoffs. Rush City’s latest casualty was the Hinckley-Finlayson
Jaguars. On Feb. 22, the boys won the conference game, 55-44. Senior
center Isaac Roll finished with 13 points and four rebounds.

The North Branch girls basketball team picked up its third North
Suburban Conference win with a victory over the Columbia Heights
Hylanders on Feb. 19. The Vikings smothered the Hylanders in a thick
paste of the full-court pressure, forcing countless turnovers in the
first half.

The North Branch hockey team took an early exit from the section
playoffs last week with a 10-2 loss to the Proctor Rails Feb. 19 in
Proctor. The game ended North Branch’s season. After one period of
play, the score was knotted at 2-2. In the second period, the Rails
unloaded seven goals to seal their victory.

The North Branch boys basketball team lost two, hard fought conference
basketball games last week. Versus Senior Jake Chambers led the team
with 28 points as the boys lost the game 80-53.In the first half of the
Viking’s game against Columbia Heights, the boys committed 18
turnovers.

The season ended abruptly for the Rush City/Pine City boys hockey team. On Feb. 19, the Dragons fell to Duluth Denfeld 11-1.

Rush City senior Jason Benson was selected to play in the high school
all-star football game June 27 at St. Cloud State Unversity.
Benson, who played strong safety and running back for the Tigers, will
play on the out-state team which plays against the metro team. (The
out-state team consists of players outside the Twin Cites metro area.)

Love was not in the air last week on Valentine’s Day as the Braham
Bombers showed no remorse in stomping the Rush City Tigers by 34
points, 72-38. Playing on their home court, the Tigers stuck with the Bombers for the
length of the first half by keeping within striking distance. The
Bombers largest first half lead was 10 points.

The
North Branch boys hockey team lost its last home game of the regular
season 10-2 to Redwood Valley on Feb. 15. Redwood Valley struck the
first of many blows, taking a 2-0 advantage
in the first period before North Branch’s Lane Noye was able to score
with less than a minute left.
