I can’t believe I’m going to miss the county fair next week. I haven’t
missed one in 39 years. I chose that week to go on vacation thinking it
was a quiet week among so many busy ones this summer. I figured the
fair was the following week and I’d be all rested up to take on the
gruelling hours of coverage.

The older you get you can be sure of one of two things: you go with the
flow or you fight every new change. In talking to a number of
centenarians over the years, I find that those who have successfully
completed 100 years of living have opted to go with the flow. In other
words...
|

Sunday morning Dick and I had breakfast with the family. The breakfast
was pancakes served up by the Rush City Lions. The family was members
of our community, people we have come to love and appreciate over the
past 39 years.

My dad whistled. I believe I have, in the past, told you about his
whistling. It was a rather haunting tune, jovial while a bit off key,
it was Dad’s alone. We’ve tried, but no one has ever gotten the notes
exactly right. It truly was Dad’s alone.

I’m writing this letter to you today to pass along some wisdom that
comes with 60-plus years of living. I know you probably won’t take this
seriously, maybe you’re not even going to read this now. First, I congratulate you all for surviving these past 13 years...

Under legislation passed by Congress – the Deficit Reduction Act of
2005 – full-power over-the-air broadcast television stations are
required to turn off their analog channels on February 17, 2009, and
continue broadcasting exclusively in the digital format.

I don’t know why, I don’t know how, but we here in East Central
Minnesota have been spared ... spared the tornadoes, the fires, the
flooding, the cyclones and the earthquakes. Whatever our troubles may be, we must be thankful we are not pulling our neighbors out from under piles of rubble...

All this talk about going green, nothing new to me. In the late 60s, my
husband and I packed up the Chevy station wagon and moved to Rush City.
It was our own 32-acre piece of God’s great earth. We were “back to the
land,” as they said.
