The Rush City/Pine City boys hockey team faced off against Amery,
Webster, and Mora in a trio of intense hockey games as they approach
the final leg of the season.
Amery
After a vanilla first period of play where the let in two goals, the
Dragons came out firing on all cylinders to open the second period
against Amery on Jan. 22.
In a high scoring affair, the Dragons escaped with a 7-6 win at home.
Terry Kraft scored 30 seconds into the second period and Brady Schumacher scored 40 seconds later to bookend the score at two.
“Again we were asleep in the first period. We made several mistakes in
our own zone giving up the puck to their players on a break out pass
and leaving an open man in front of the net,” head coach Tim
Schlichting said.
The Dragons were able to net five more goals before the game ended to give them the win.
Amery pulled its goalie with about two minutes left and scored a goal, with the extra attacker on the ice.
“The guys were able to hold things together in our own end where the
last few minutes of intense play concluded,” Schlichting said.
Webster
Versus Webster Jan. 18, the coaching staff made some changes to the
lineup, moving Frank Hauner to center to try and generate more
offensive opportunities.
Haakon Hansen was brought back to defense to have more of a stay-at-home puck handler to help the Dragons on the defensive end.
The change-up didn’t bear fruit, as the boys lost 3-2.
“The players dug down deep and came up with two goals to end the game with a respectable 3-2 loss,” Schlichting said.
Mora
In game Schlichting would like to dust under the rug, the Dragons lost to Mora 5-0 on Jan. 17.
“The guys worked hard, but seemed to be lacking intensity, heart and
grittiness we’ve needed to give us an edge,” Schlichting said.
